What's the purpose of a cold frame?

A cold frame is designed to help smaller plants grow without the need for artificial heat, as well as protect your plants from rain, wind and snow. Cold frames are also used to 'toughen up' plants which need to be acclimatised to colder temperatures without them being destroyed by harsh conditions in autumn and winter.

What are the benefits of cold frames?

A cold frame is good for keeping your plants safe from the elements, as they can be damaged by snow, winds and rain during the colder months. The glass roof enables your young plants to receive enough light to grow while adapting to chilly winter conditions.

While it's a less popular method, you can also use a cold frame in summer to amplify the heat your plants receive to improve their growth, such as chilli plants or tomatoes.

What's the difference between a cold frame and a greenhouse?

Cold frames are a type of greenhouse but generally a lot smaller and are mainly used in the winter months. They are specifically designed for young plants to acclimatise to cold conditions. A greenhouse is usually larger and has its own heating and ventilation system to grow a variety of plants all-year round.
