Reaching skyward with architectural precision, this award-winning conifer creates striking vertical accents with its dense, steel-blue needles.Juniperus chinensis 'Pyramidalis', honoured with the Royal Horticultural Society Award of Garden Merit, maintains a narrow columnar form that requires minimal maintenance, making it an excellent choice for both container and specimen planting. Its slow-growing and hardy nature allow it to thrive invarious conditions, while its prickly, grey-green juvenile foliage forms an impenetrable column that adds year-round structure to the landscape. This versatile evergreen adapts beautifully to multiple garden roles, from rock garden sentinel to specimen plant among seasonal plantings, and its compact, pyramidal silhouette brings formality to borders or decorative containers needing little, if any, pruning.

Care guide

This hardy conifer requires minimal maintenance once established, making it an excellent choice for busy gardeners. Water regularly during the first growing season to establish a deep root system, but once established, it becomes quite drought tolerant.

Avoid overwatering, as junipers prefer their soil on the drier side. Feeding is typically unnecessary unless the soil is particularly poor, in which case apply a slow-release fertiliser formulated for conifers in early spring.

While pruning isn't essential for maintaining its columnar shape, you can trim lightly in late winter or early spring if needed to maintain size or remove any damaged or unbalanced branches. Avoid planting near apple trees as junipers can be alternate hosts for rust disease.
