How Your Plant Will Arrive Planting Requirements Planting Guide
Aside from regularly watering your Clematis after it has been planted, you should apply mulch to protect its delicate roots from drying out.
Clematis plants are extremely versatile and can even be grown as part of a hedge, up a tree, or as ground cover.
When planting, dig a hole that is twice the circumference of the pot. Ensure the pot sits level with the soil (roughly), and with the graft point above the soil. Fill the remaining space with a mix of compost and garden soil, and do not firm down.
Clematis will need sufficient space to grow or it can become tangled and messy. Groups 1 - 3 will need a trellis in order to scramble upwards.
In terms of care, watering is important, especially during the summer months. When there hasn't been any rain, we recommend that you water twice a week.
Lovingly grown by our trusted nursery, your climbing plant will be delivered right to your doorstep. This approach means that you will receive nursery fresh plants that were on the growing table one day, and at your door the following! Our expert nursery have spent decades perfecting the art of watering, feeding, and pruning climbing plants and will do so until hours before they are packed.
Each plant has been grown on a cane and is later expertly packaged into a specially designed, extra thick cardboard box. They will then be sent via a delicate courier network to prevent any chance of damage in transit.
Please note, while the plants (detailed on the right), are our Lonicera varieties, they are a good indication of the quality you can expect to receive.
Clematis is an easy to grow plant. Its growth and output will likely be excellent providing you follow our planting and care instructions. Below we address some common query topics:
- Hardiness: Clematis plants can be found growing throughout temperate regions, so are well accustomed to the UK's climate.
- Position: Clematis prefer full sun but will suffice in partial shade. Evergreen varieties need shelter and herbaceous varieties need sunny spots.
- Soil: Soil types can be an unwelcome confusion as many plants will adapt to their conditions. Nonetheless, less than ideal conditions will certainly limit your plant's growth. Waterlogged soils will starve it of oxygen, which plays a key role in photosynthesis; causing its roots to rot and creating an optimal environment for disease.
- Pots: Choose a pot that is around 50cm deep and be sure to apply mulch. When the weather warms up, make sure that you water your clematis regularly.
