November marks a transitional period in the gardening calendar, as the chill in the air signals the approach of winter. This month is ideal for wrapping up essential garden tasks, such as mulching to protect perennials and preparing beds for the cold months ahead.
It’s also a time to appreciate the beauty of autumn foliage and the last blooms of the season. Gardeners can focus on planting spring bulbs, cleaning tools, and planning for next year’s garden while enjoying the serene beauty of their landscape before winter sets in.
General Garden Jobs & Maintenance
As temperatures drop, focus on cleaning and preparing your garden for winter. Clear fallen leaves to prevent fungal diseases and create leaf mold for future use. Check and clean greenhouse glass to maximize light, and insulate with bubble wrap to retain warmth. This is also a good time to plan for spring, ordering seeds and plants early while ensuring tools are cleaned and stored properly.
Storage | Check stored vegetables for signs of rot and remove any damaged ones.
Mulch Border | Apply a layer of mulch to flower beds to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
Bare Root Trees | Prune winter-flowering shrubs like witch hazel.

November is ideal for planting spring-flowering bulbs such as tulips and daffodils, ensuring they’re buried at least twice their depth. You can also plant garlic, shallots, and winter lettuce to enjoy fresh produce through the colder months. Protect tender plants with fleece, and consider planting evergreen shrubs to maintain garden structure during winter.

In the allotment, prioritize sowing winter crops like broad beans and overwintering onions. Tidy up any remaining crops, removing debris that could harbor pests. Ensure that any stored vegetables are checked regularly for rot. Additionally, consider planting green manure to improve soil health for the next growing season while keeping weeds at bay.
