Awnings are a practical and stylish way to protect you and your patio from the elements. All of our luxury awnings are made from hard wearing polyester fabric that is waterproof and keeps its quality finish for years on end. In our step by step guide, we explain all you need to do to keep your awning looking as good as new with a simple clean.
What can you use to clean an awning?
Keeping your awning fabric and frame as good as new is easy and simply requires a little elbow grease. So, whether you have an electric awning or a manual awning, there’s no need to pay for a professional clean. Always avoid cleaning your awning in a washing machine as this could strip your awning of its waterproof protection.
To clean an awning, use warm soapy water and a sponge to clean the fabric cover. Wipe the awning frame with a damp cloth and avoid using a scouring pad as this could scratch the surface.
A step by step guide to cleaning an awning?
Our step by step guide makes cleaning your awning simple. To clean your awning, you can either keep it in position, fixed to your wall, or dismantle it and clean it from the ground.
1. First, give the awning fabric and frame a quick wash with a hosepipe. They should be wet but not saturated.
2. Fill a clean bucket with a warm, soapy water solution using a little washing up liquid. For very dirty awning fabrics, try a recommended awning shampoo, but avoid using harsh chemicals or bleach, as these can cause irreversible damage to your awning’s fabric.
3. Using a soft sponge or cloth, gently wipe away any dirt and grime.
4. A soft bristled brush can be used for dried on and very grubby areas. Lightly remove any dirt and avoid scrubbing too harshly as this can remove the awning’s waterproof protective coating.
5. Leave the awning to dry naturally before rolling it up. This will prevent the frame from rusting and the fabric from becoming mouldy.
How can I protect my awning?
It’s a good idea to protect your awning from the elements, especially during the winter months. Awning covers and storage bags will keep your awning protected from the rain and wind when not in use.
How often should I clean my awning?
Clean your awning at the start and the end of the summer season. The first clean will wash away any dirt and grime that may have built up over the winter. A second clean will remove any dust that may have built up over the summer months.
Can you use bleach on awnings?
Whilst a solution made from bleach and water can be used on some awnings, it’s best to avoid where possible. Bleach can be too harsh to use on luxury awning fabrics. A simple wash with warm, soapy water, a soft bristle brush or sponge should be all you need to keep your awning in perfect condition.
