Overview

Bees love their flowers. Towering stems rise above the hairy, lobed leaves from early summer bearing richly coloured, near-black, single flowers, each with a yellow throat. A magnificent biennial or short-lived perennial, this hollyhock is made for a cottage garden setting. Please note: Rust is a very common problem on hollyhocks, and unless the plants have been sprayed intensively with fungicides, it is rare to see one that will not have been affected. We keep beehives here on our nursery, so we try to keep the use of chemicals to a minimum - and in our experience, while hollyhock rust may look a little unsightly towards the end of summer, it rarely has an impact on the plants' impressive performance.

Care guide

Water well during dry spells. All hollyhocks are prone to rust and organic control may be obtained by a weekly spray at the beginning of the growing season with neem oil, sulphur, or copper. The undersides of the leaves must be treated. In autumn cut the plants back to 15cm (6in) from the ground.

Pots and Packaging
Our 9cm pots are given extra packaging to protect the plant. This extra packaging consists of a recyclable plastic blister pack which is then placed in a cardboard box for delivery.

Preparation
The nursery will ensure the plant is moist while it's waiting to be picked up. Our quality control team waters the plant before packing them where necessary to make sure that the plant is suitably watered for transport. Plants with long delicate stems are secured with canes to prevent damage.

Typically plants are delivered ready to plant and will take some time to settle, grow and look more like the product image above.
